Two Leading Opposition Newspapers of Belarus Officially Sold Again

MINSK. Nov 24 (Interfax) - Two leading opposition newspapers of Belarus, Narodnaya Volya and Nasha Niva, are being officially distributed again, ideology adviser to the Belarusian president Vsevolod Yanchevsky told Interfax.

"Kiosks started to sell the newspapers last week," he said. The list may be enlarged, he added.

Narodnaya Volya and Nasha Niva have not been sold via the Belsoyuzpechat network or by subscription for the past few years.

As for the distribution of certain regional opposition editions, the official said, "Technical problems that have kept them off the state distribution network will be resolved if they are really technical."

"The government wants any media that abides by the law to be sold," the adviser said.

Belarusian citizens have had access to alternative sources of information all through the period of President Alexander Lukashenko's office, he said. "The president has always been sure of the correctness of his policy and has never feared anything," he said.

The media "engaged in fierce criticism makes itself marginal," the adviser said. Yanchevsky said that such media did not have many readers. He referred to a notorious opposition news resource and said it was visited by two types of people - irreconcilable opposition members and officials reading whatever the media might write about them.
