Alleged US spy cannot leave bed in Belarusian colony

As the lawyer says, the state of health of the accused US citizen Emanuel Zeltser is "very bad", Charter 97 website reports.

"Zeltser complains of pain in the legs, backache and high pressure. His state does not allow him to get up earlier than 2 p.m.," BelaPAN was told by his lawyer Zmitser Harachka.

As said by him, at the moment lawyers try to make possible another medical checkup of E. Zeltser by an independent physician. After the checkup Zmitser Harachka plant to seek early conditional release of the US citizen on the grounds of his health.

On November 21 the lawyer visited his client who stays in the hospital of the detention facility No. 11 in Mahilyou.

On November 19 representatives of the US embassy in Minsk visited on Wednesday imprisoned American lawyer Emanuel Zeltser. For the first time US diplomats were allowed to meet with the doctor who is responsible for the Zeltser's health. As said by the prison doctor, the state of health of E. Zeltesr is satisfactory.

On August 11, Mr. Zeltser was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of "attempted industrial espionage" and the use of fake documents. His secretary, Russian national Vladlena Funk, was sentenced to one year in prison on the same charges. The Minsk City Court held the trial behind closed doors and few details of the case were disclosed to the public.

The pair were arrested upon their arrival in Minsk in March and put into the KGB detention center. The Supreme Court of Belarus upheld the prison terms on October 31.
