IMF Sees Progress In Belarus Loan Talks; Working On Details

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The International Monetary Fund said Monday that talks with Belarus over a financing package have resulted in an overall agreement on what policies the country should follow to deal with the global financial crisis.

Belarus, which has been caught up in the global credit crunch along with several other Eastern European countries, has requested a $2 billion loan from the IMF to help boost international reserves.

"The authorities and the mission have made good progress, and there is broad agreement on the policies to help Belarus cope with the difficult global environment," the fund said in a statement. "However, more time is needed to refine the technical details of the policy options."

An IMF mission has returned from Minsk, but talks continue, the IMF said.

Earlier this month, Russia agreed to provide the former Soviet bloc country with a $2 billion stabilization loan.
