Teen from Belarus finally leaves Bay Area

16-year old Tanya Kazyra flew back to Belarus Sunday morning after holding out for three months.

PETALUMA, CA (KGO) -- A teenager from Belarus who refused to leave her host family in Petaluma is on her way back home.

16-year old Tanya Kazyra flew back to Belarus Sunday morning after holding out for three months.

She came to Petaluma this past summer with members of the Chernobyl Children Project, but she said she didn't want to go back to her troubled family.

As a result Belarus suspended the program.

The program's directors said Sunday that Kazyra decided to leave on her own.

She has a student visa that would have allowed her to stay in California legally until December.
