Grandmother Asks Belarusian Diplomats to Facilitate Granddaughter's Return From U.S.

MINSK. Nov 20 (Interfax) - The grandmother of a Belarusian underage girl Tatyana Kozyro, has urged the Belarusian Foreign Ministry to help her granddaughter return home from the United States, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry told Interfax on Thursday.

"The Foreign Ministry received an official letter today from Nadezhda Novik, the girl's grandmother and guardian, urging diplomats to take all necessary measures to facilitate Tatyana's return to Belarus as soon as possible," the Foreign Ministry said. Novik confirmed that Tatyana had finally decided to return home, according to the Foreign Ministry.

"The grandmother said she was worried that the family her granddaughter is staying with, is an obstacle to her return to Belarus and it has not been allowing the girl to call to the Belarusian consul in Washington," the ministry said. "Tatyana's guardian qualified the host family's conduct as illegal detention of a minor in the United States."

The Foreign Ministry also said that despite the family's ban, a Belarusian diplomat had managed to get in touch with Tatyana by phone. The girl confirmed to the diplomat her insistent request to help her return home as soon as possible.

"Acting in the interests of a Belarusian underage citizen and meeting her guardian's request, the Belarusian side plans to ask U.S. officials to take all necessary measures to facilitate Tatyana's return to Belarus," the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said.
