WiMAX in Belarus awaits spectrum allocation

MINSK (WiMAX Day). A conference was held earlier this month in Minsk that explored the potential for wireless technologies in Belarus. With representatives from the Ministry of Communications, as well as local telecoms MCI, BelGIE, Beltelecom and Belcel Telecom, the conference confirmed the opportunity and need for WiMAX, the development of which rests on the allocation of radio frequencies.

The Ministry of Communications has already approved the use of 3.5 GHz frequencies for wireless broadband, but they have not been allocated. The Deputy head of The Ministry of Communications and Information, Sergei Novikov, said "Questions about radio frequency resources in the Republic are solved:. today the prospect of allocating radio frequency resource defined. The Commission must consider the terms and conditions for issuance of this resource for interested operators."

Some networks are already planning to deploy WiMAX. According to Sergei Sivodedov, Deputy Director-General for technical issues at Beltelecom said that while operators are "still awaiting a decision on the frequency:we can begin to build some plans for the deployment of WiMAX and national networks in the Republic of Belarus."
