Belarus Summons US Ambassador To Protest Sanctions - AFP

MINSK, Belarus (AFP)--Belarus summoned the U.S. ambassador to the foreign ministry Thursday to protest sanctions imposed against the country's largest petrochemical company.

"Belarus has registered a resolute protest against the actions of the U.S. administration," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Andrei Popov said.

"The Belarus side demanded that the United States restore the assets and property to their rightful owner" Belneftekhim, he said.

The U.S. Treasury said Tuesday it was implementing sanctions against state- owned Belneftekhim as it was controlled by the country's "oppressive" president, Alexander Lukashenko.

U.S. officials have described Belarus as Europe's last dictatorship and raised concerns about political repression and human rights abuses.

The Treasury sanctions bar U.S. citizens from doing business with Belneftekhim and freezes any of the company's assets under U.S. jurisdiction.
