Labour situation in Belarus and Myanmar will be discussed, along with youth employment and labour inspection

/noticias.info/ GENEVA (ILO News) - The Governing Body of the International Labour Office (ILO) will address a wide range of issues at its 297th session beginning here today, including basic labour rights in Myanmar and Belarus, the ILO response to the post-crisis situation in Lebanon and the latest report of the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association.

The meeting, scheduled for 2-17 November, will also consider ILO activities in the field of youth employment and labour inspection, new approaches to international chemicals management and ship breaking, and progress in the implementation of decent work country programmes in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Central Asia and the Arab states (see GB.297/TC/1). The Governing Body will also discuss resolutions on technical cooperation, the employment relationship and on asbestos adopted by the International Labour Conference last June.

The Committee on Social and Employment Policy will examine ILO efforts in implementing the 2005 International Labour Conference resolution concerning youth employment, and how the quantity and quality of labour inspections worldwide can be improved through an integrated labour inspection system.

The Working Party on the Social Dimension of Globalization will discuss the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) ministerial declaration on generating full and productive employment and decent work for all, the follow-up to the High-level Panel on UN System-wide Coherence, and the follow-up to the discussion during the International Labour Conference in June on changing patterns in the world of work.

Regarding the ILO response to the post-crisis situation in Lebanon, following a mission sent to the country in September, the ILO will develop project proposals to improve the livelihood of vulnerable groups, to establish a social employment fund for war-affected workers, to strengthen labour administration and labour market governance, and to foster local economic development.

The Committee on Technical Cooperation will review the plan of action and priorities for the ILO over the next four years regarding the abolition of child labour following discussion during the annual Conference in June on the global report on child labour.

The Governing Body is the executive body of the International Labour Office (the Office is the secretariat of the Organization). It meets three times a year, in March, June and November and takes decisions on ILO policy, the agenda of the International Labour Conference and the draft Programme and Budget of the Organization for submission to the Conference.

It is composed of 56 titular members (28 Governments, 14 Employers and 14 Workers) and 66 deputy members (28 Governments, 19 Employers and 19 Workers). Ten of the titular government seats are permanently held by States of chief industrial importance (Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States). The other Government members are elected by the Conference every three years.
