EU: Belarus Is Ineligible For Trade Pact With Bloc

BRUSSELS -(Dow Jones)- The European Commission said Tuesday that Belarus' poor record on human rights made it ineligible for a trade deal.

The E.U. listed what it described as the benefits Belarus would enjoy should it move towards democracy with respect for human rights and the rule of law.

These included greater opportunities for trade which would help Belarus' economy, improved transport and energy networks and cross border cooperation.

But they will only become possible when the people of Belarus elect their leaders democratically, are free to express their opinions, have access to independent information and when there is a fair and transparent justice system, the Commission said in a statement.

"The people of Belarus are the first victims of the isolation imposed by the country's authorities," Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner said Tuesday.
