Talks in Moscow amid Russian-Belarus tension

Attempts are being made to calm tension between Russia and Belarus, two countries that normally enjoy close relations. The presidents of both nations are holding talks in Moscow amid a row over gas prices. Russia has told its ally that the price of Russian gas sent to Belarus could rise four-fold this winter, similar to increases announced for Ukraine.

Moscow is also said to be concerned that Belarus is on-selling a lot of the Russian gas it receives duty-free, making big profits.

Minsk has hit back by saying that it might be forced to increase the fee it charges for helping transport Russian gas to Europe.

It also says rent for Russian military bases in Belarus could be increased.
