Death Toll Continues To Rise From Explosion At Belarusian Plant

PINSK, Belarus -- The death toll from an explosion at a plywood plant in the southwestern Belarusian town of Pinsk has risen to five, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Three of the victims were buried on October 27.

Two injured workers are in a hospital in Pinsk, five are in a clinic in the regional capital, Berastse, and nine have been taken to hospitals in Minsk.

The plant's officials told RFE/RL that the deceased workers' families have received 3 million Belarusian rubles (about $1,000) each as compensation.

The plant's management is covering all travel expenses between Pinsk and other cities incurred by the victims' relatives.

The accident on October 25 was caused by the explosion of two boilers in the plant's workshop. The explosion caused a glass ceiling to collapse on workers.

A special commission is investigating the causes of the explosion.
