Defence Minister of Belarus pay his first visit to Lithuania

13:41 GMT, October 27, 2010 October 26-27, Lt Gen Yuri Zhadobin, Defence Minister of Belarus, and a delegation of the Belarusian Armed Forces will be paying an official visit to Lithuania by invitation of the Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Jukneviciene. The visit was planned as early as 2009 but then it has been delayed because of the changes in the Government of Belarus. It is the first Belarusian Defence Minister's visit in Lithuania.

On October 27 the guest Minister Lt Gen Yuri Zhadobin will meet with the Natonal Defence Minister R. Jukneviciene, Acting Chief of Defence of Lithuania Land Force Commander Maj Gen Jonas Vytautas Zukas, and other representatives of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and Armed Forces.

In the meetings relevant matters of international security, bilateral and regional cooperation, means of enhancing mutual trust and participation of troops in multinational missions will be addressed.

After the meeting Minister R. Jukneviciene and her Belarusian counterpart Lt Gen Yuri Zhadobin will sign an agreement on defence cooperation.

Later the guest will visit the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces where he will get acquainted with activity of the institution, Lithuania's participation in multinational operations, system of training troops before multinational deployments.

Defence Minister Lt Gen Yuri Zhadobin is also planned to visit Gen Jonas Zemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy where the guest will deliver a lecture to officers, teachers and cadets of the Academy about the Belarusian Armed Forces, its history and present condition.

A cultural programme is planned during the visit: the guest and his delegation will tour the Old Town of Vilnius and Trakai.

Embassy of Lithuania in Minsk has been serving as contact Embassy for NATO since 2004: specialists of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence provides consultations to the Belarusian Armed Forces in the course of implementing NATO partnership objectives. In the beginning of the next year Lithuania will hand over that function to the Embassy of France in Minsk.
