Belarus opposition protesters dragged to detention

Associated Press

Security forces using rough tactics have broken up a protest by government opponents in the Belarusian capital.

Police and men in plain clothes set upon a few dozen demonstrators about a minute after they gathered in a central square in Minsk. They beat some protesters and detained more than 20.

Opponents of authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko try to protest on the 16th of every month, showing solidarity with people they say are political prisoners. They also want to call attention to the handful of opposition figures who've disappeared since Lukashenko came to power in the former Soviet republic in 1994.

Opposition United Civil party leader Anatoly Lebedko said as he was being detained that Belarus is Europe's last dictatorship.
