Connect CIS Summit set for Minsk, Belarus, 26-27 November
Call for investment in ICT and transition to digital communication ACCREDIT NOW Geneva, 29 October 2009 What: Connect CIS Summit The Connect CIS Summit is the second in a series of regional events designed to stimulate public-private partnerships and investment needed to "connect the unconnected" by 2015. It builds on the successful Connect Africa Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2007 as part of ITU's mission to "Connect the World".
When: 26-27 November 2009 Where: Minsk, Belarus: The National Library Why: - To highlight the huge market potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), as well as its growing importance as a major ICT development hub, particularly in the area of software innovation.
- To mobilize the human, financial and technical resources required to support a rapid, region-wide transition to digital infrastructure and services, widely recognized as the engine of future employment, economic growth and social and economic development.
The Summit will feature high-level discussion panels and networking sessions, focusing on the challenges posed to emerging and transition economies in harnessing the full potential of ICTs. Major commitments will be announced on multi-stakeholder partnerships to meet these challenges.
Who: The Connect CIS Summit is expected to bring together some 400 participants, including leaders from the CIS and neighbouring countries, regulatory authorities, industry and financial institutions. It will be hosted by the President of Belarus, Mr Alexander Lukashenko.
The Summit will offer a venue for leaders from the public and private sectors as well as international and regional financing and development agencies to network face-to-face and forge new partnerships.

The Connect CIS Summit will be open to media. Media will have access to plenary sessions. Accredited Press will have access to the Media Centre at the Summit venue. Pre-registered journalists will be requested to present their confirmation letter, together with their passport or ID card to receive an official Connect CIS Summit Media badge.
Unannounced journalists will be required to undergo the full accreditation process. Please ensure you have available the necessary supporting documentation.
The Connect CIS Summit will be held in conjunction with the CIS Regional Preparatory Meeting (23-24 November 2009) for the 2010 World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC), which gathers Member States and partners every four years to lay out plans for the forthcoming period. A Ministerial preparatory meeting for the Connect CIS Summit will be held on 25 November.
