Financial Crisis Proves Belarus Right - PM Lukashenko

MINSK, Belarus (AFP)--The financial crisis engulfing the world proves Belarus was right to ignore critics and protect its economy, President Alexander Lukashenko said Tuesday.

"Who was right? Lukashenko, with his policies to protect the economy and the orientation toward a normal model of development? Or those who call themselves free marketeers?" Lukashenko said.

"Today you can buy a good, modern enterprise for peanuts. I think in the West they will soon come to their senses and will place their national dignity in the hands of the state, as we do here today."

The ex-Soviet republic, which has been dubbed "Europe's last dictatorship" by Washington, retains a command economy that has seen few market reforms since the collapse of communism.

Lukashenko said this was the real question the West should be asking of the Belarus political opposition, which has long been critical of the government's policies.
