Belarussian election shows Lukashenko has popular support - Putin

MINSK, October 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has spoken highly of the recent parliamentary elections in Belarus.

"According to our estimates, the elections in Belarus were held at a very high organizational and political level. The returns indicate that your policy enjoys the people's support," Putin said at a meeting with Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko on Monday.

At the beginning of the meeting the Russian prime minister conveyed to Lukashenko the best wishes from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and also wished success to the newly-elected Belarussian legislators in their work.

In reply to Lukashenko's remark that the Russian and Belarussian peoples were expecting their leaders to take concrete action Putin said, "I am certain that they expect us to carry out consistent and competent economic work that would yield social effects and improve their well-being."

Putin said that Russia, as before, was prepared to consider "the question of wider financial cooperation and of supporting the Belarussian financial system, if need be."

In his opinion, it would be correct "to find and concentrate our administrative resources on the most promising lines of activity and on projects that would demonstrate our growing capabilities and the future of our relations."

The Russian prime minister said he would very much like to see these projects in the sphere of high technologies. He expressed the certainty that Russia and Belarus would continue to successfully resolve the emerging problems at the level of executive and legislative authorities.
