Belarus: exports of wild berries ceased due to reduction in prices

Enterprises of Belarusian cooperative Union ceased exporting bilberries and cranberries, reported Ivan Makovskiy, the deputy president of Belarusian cooperative Union to BELTA. He noted that at the moment price decreasing was observed on the international market due to world financial crisis. However, it was difficult to forecast reduction in prices for wild berries which always were in requisition on the West-European countries.

During the current year, prices for bilberries are declared at f 2 euro/kg against 2.8 euro/kg a year ago.

According to the deputy president, during the current year, 4.400 tonnes of bilberry were stored up that is more from the last year's bumper crop of bilberry.

2.000 tonnes of bilberry were exported. Makovskiy emphasized that bilberry would not be exported until the prices on the international market reached acceptable level. At the moment bilberry price on the international market reached 2.5 euro/kg. but this level is not acceptable for domestic enterprises.

The same situation characterized the cranberries market. Enterprises started selling produce at 2.5 euro/kg, but by the end of the week the prices decreased to the level of 2 euro/kg. At that, supply of cranberries for exports was postponed. The produce was processed and frozen for sale in 2009.

During the last years, 90% of wild berries were exported, but in the current year, one half of bilberries and cranberries were processed by domestic enterprises. This trend will take place in the nearest future.
