Lukashenko says new page in Belarus-Nicaragua relations opens

MINSK, October 30 (Itar-Tass) -- Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said a new page had opened in the history of relations of Belarus not only with Nicaragua "but also with America in the part where Nicaragua is situated." "It is important to us from the viewpoint of the economy to have a footing in that part of America not only with you but also with your neighbours," Lukashenko said at the meeting with Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez on Thursday. The president has said such cooperation means important support for Belarus in international organizations (United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement).

Lukashenko stressed that Belarussian leadership "has serious attitude to relations with Nicaragua and looks forward to the visit of President Daniel Ortega to Belarus." The Belarussian leader noted he also plans to visit Nicaragua.

He said that in cooperation with Nicaragua there might be joint projects with other Latin American countries in various areas.

The Nicaraguan foreign minister, in his turn, said his country would expect Lukashenko's visit as early as the next year. He stressed Ortega would respond to the Belarusian president's invitation.

The foreign minister stressed the need to modernize the United Nations. "We must jointly transform the present United Nations system so that the organization should meet present- day needs of humanity that lands in difficult situations ever more often," the Nicaraguan foreign minister said.
