Belarus: vegetable auction project is to be launched

The Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of agrarian produce and Belarus cooperative union plan to realize a project concerning vegetable auctions, reported Mikhail Sventitskiy, the first deputy of Trade Minister to BelaPan. He noted that the project would be based on the experience of Poland and Netherlands and it would start functioning in Gomelsk region.

As Sventitskiy reported, the government had taken appropriate steps to protect the domestic market from unfair competition on fruit and vegetable produce shipments from abroad. In particular, the government has imposed increased customs duties for certain vegetable groups. At the moment domestic producers have all opportunities for promoting their produce to the trade chains.

As of September 18, 2008, seasonal customs duties for vegetables were set up. These duties will be valid till December 1, 2008 and from March 1 and till June 1, 2009. Seasonal customs duties rates for fresh tomatoes and cucumbers total 50 % of customs value, for onion - 180%, cabbage - 75%, carrot - 120 %, beet - 150%.
