Belarus and Nicaragua have serious goals in the economic cooperation, Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov said in a meeting with his Nicaraguan counterpart Samuel Santos Lopez who is in Minsk on an official visit. This is the first visit of such high-level delegation from Nicaragua to Belarus, reported Belta.

Sergei Martynov said that the visit is expected to lay down serious foundation for the development of cooperation with Nicaragua. "We have similar views on international problems and on the internal development of the country," he said.

The Foreign Minister of Nicaragua said "we hope that the visit and talks in Minsk will promote bilateral relations in all areas including the contacts between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries." Samuel Santos Lopez expressed the confidence that the bilateral projects will be successfull considering that the two countries have developed friendship and understanding.

The main aim of the visit is to give an impetus to Belarusian-Nicaraguan interstate relations, to bring bilateral cooperation onto a brand new level, to look for the ways of intensifying trade and economic relations, expand cooperation in education and other areas.

In January-August 2008, Belarus-Nicaragua trade was down 55.6% over the same period last year due to the fall in imports. Exports soared by 78% due to a three-time increase in the supplies of tractors which are major exports. Belarus' exports to Nicaragua included tyres, engine spare parts, fluid pumps, components for motor cars and tractors. Belarus imported Nicaraguan coffee. The most promising areas in Belarus-Nicaragua bilateral trade and economic cooperation are the deliveries of the Belarusian tractors, trucks, road equipment, electric appliances, farm machines and equipment, fertilizers and tyres to Nicaragua.
