Belarus is an Orthodox Country and Will Adhere to Chosen Political Line - Lukashenko

MINSK. Oct 24 (Interfax) - Orthodoxy has a special significance for Belarus, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

"There is no doubt that Belarus is an Orthodox nation. We shall strictly follow the chosen line because the people want it," Lukashenko told Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II in Minsk on Friday.

"Jointly with other faiths, we have come to realize that the Orthodox Church is a foundation, it includes 85% believers," he said.

"Nobody argues about it," he said.

"Your arrival is not only an event for the believers, it is a major political event," he said.

The Belarusian people "are especially grateful to you because you have a great and kind attitude to the Belarusian people," he said.

"A great merit of the Church is that there is no inter-faith enmity in Belarus," he said.
