Belarus passes new amendments on telecoms law

On 10 October 2008 the government of Belarus adopted amendments to the Law 'On Telecommunications'. In a statement, the country's deputy head of the parliamentary commission on industry, fuel and energy complex, transport, communications and business, Alexander Shevko, announced that the core tenets of EU legislation have been taken into account in the new version of the Law. e-Belarus.org writes that the law relaxes all limitations on the number of companies licensed to offer communications services. In addition the new law proposes special obligations for major telcos and introduces preconditions for interconnection of national and international networks. It is understood the new version of the law also clarifies issues of telecommunications' tariff regulation in a way that is designed to minimise financial losses of national communications operator (Beltelecom).
