MINSK, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Belarus will postpone a privatisation programme because the global financial crisis has depressed potential prices for assets to be sold off, a senior official said on Wednesday.
'Why should we sell a chicken at half the price if it is in fact worth more?' First Deputy Economy Minister Pyotr Zhabko told a news conference. 'Let's wait before we sell.'
Zhabko said the authorities hoped to privatise more than 140 enterprises, including oil refineries and banks in the next few years in Belarus, where much of the economy remains under state control.
