EU: Lifts Ban Visas For Lukashenko

(AGI) - Luxemburg, Oct 13 - The EU Foreign Ministers have decided to lift the block of visas for Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and tens of leaders of the former Soviet republic to encourage the progress of Minsk towards democracy.

The French on-duty presidency announced this on the sidelines of the meeting in Luxemburg. In 2006, after the controversial presidential elections, the EU decided to keep 41 Belarus leaders from entering its territory, among whom Lukashenko, the man who has been leading the country with an iron fist since 1994. Some of the leaders who were involved in the disappearance of political prisoners in the period 1999-2000 and the president of the electoral commission, Lydia Yermoshina, are still not allowed to enter the EU. The ministers specified that the restrictions could be reapplied at any moment if Belarus leaves the road to democracy.
