Russian MFA Information and Press Department Commentary on the Results of the Parliamentary Elections in the Republic of Belarus

Regular parliamentary elections took place in Belarus on September 28, showing a voter turnout of about 75 percent, according to information from the country's Central Election Commission.

Moscow believes that the elections have evidenced not only high civic activeness, but also the Belarusian people's interest in continuity and stability.

The statement by the CIS mission of over 400 observers, who visited all 110 election districts on polling day, emphasizes that the elections were well organized, in accordance with domestic electoral legislation and with generally recognized international norms for democratic elections. The mission also holds that the election commission and state and executive bodies had created conditions for drawing as many political forces of the country as possible into the election process and ensured protection and realization of the electoral rights of citizens during the parliamentary elections.

Against this background we find the elections' assessment by the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission disappointing, whose leadership holds that the OSCE cannot recognize the elections in Belarus as completely free and democratic.

This prompts us to ask what further electoral "improvements" should Belarusian authorities make so that elections in Belarus are recognized as free and democratic?
