Belarus Seeks Russian Investment in Its Military Industrial Sector

MINSK. Oct 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The Belarusian State Military Industrial Committee expects to attract Russian businesses to the privatization of certain military industry enterprises, Pyotr Rogozhevsky, a first deputy chairman of the committee, said in an interview published in the Respublika newspaper.

"In order to attract foreign capital, first of all Russian, the State Military Industrial Committee plans to privatize a number of organizations within its jurisdiction. While their specialization will be preserved, this will make it possible to invest significant finances in their development and place orders on their grounds to manufacture new types of competitive products," Rogozhevsky said.

Belarus plans to draw about $100 million in investment in its military industrial sector in 2008-2010, Rogozhevsky said. It also plans to set up joint ventures with China, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.

Interfax reported earlier that the Belarusian government had endorsed a plan of privatization of a number of state-owned facilities, including 15 enterprises within the State Military Industrial Committee's jurisdiction.
