Joint Defense for Russia and Belarus

Russia and Belarus will sign an agreement creating a joint missile defense system, secretary of the Union State Pavel Borodin told journalists today at a session of the collegium of the Defense Ministries of Russia and Belarus. The signing will take place on November 2 at a session of the Supreme State Council of the Union State in Moscow, Borodin said. "In military terms, it is practically defense against NATO," he said.

Borodin added that the expansion of military cooperation between Russia and Belarus will make it possible to create a large number of new jobs in the defense complexes of both countries.

Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov stated at the collegium session that only close coordination between the armed forces of Russia and Belarus can be a factor in neutralizing challenges and threats. According to Serdyukov, that cooperation is developing as part of the program of the agreement on the creation of the Union State. He expressed the hope that constructive discussion and the necessary decisions would make it possible to create a Union State defensive system.

Belarusian Defense Minister Gen. Col. Leonid Maltsev was highly pleased with the work of the collegium and noted that, as always, the work was straightforward. He said that great effort is being made to increase the defenses of the Union State on its Western side.
