Russian PM visits Belarus to boost economic ties

Russian Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov asked on Friday to erase trade barriers between Russian andBelarus in a bid to promote trade between the two neighbors.

An agreement on lifting restrictions in bilateral trade must be fully implemented, Itar-Tass news agency quoted Zubkov as saying at a meeting of the Russia-Belarus Union State Council of Ministers in Minsk.

The fulfillment of this agreement will promote the formation of the common economic and customs space bilaterally and at the Eurasian Economic Community, he said.

He also promised that the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom will fulfill its commitments regarding gas delivery to the country.

Trade between Russia and Belarus reached 15 billion U.S. dollars in January-August period, up 22 percent year on year.

The growth of Belarussian exports to Russia stood at 28.3 percent to 5.5 billion U.S. dollars. Meanwhile, Russian exports to Belarus increased by 19.6 percent to over 10 billion U.S. dollars.
