More Polish activists detained in Belarus

According to Ines Todryk, a journalist of the "Polish Magazine" published in Belarus, the arrests this week of more than 20 Polish activists are pre-emptive actions before the "European March", aiming to draw the European public attention to the cases of human rights abuse in Belarus, scheduled in Minsk for Sunday.

She told the Polish Radio that many caught up in the recent wave of arrests, which begun last Tuesday, had been detained by the militia, mainly on charges of "swearing in public".

The editor in chief of the "Polish Magazine" Igor Bancer was arrested for 10 days for "hooliganism" on Friday morning.

He has gone on hunger strike. When the head of the Poles Association in Belarus Andzelika Borys tried to intervene, she was fined 460,000 Belarus roubles (GBP 150).

On Friday morning, the Polish government summoned the charge d`affaires of the Belarus embassy in Warsaw to the foreign ministry as a sign of protest against the lawless treatment of Poles in Belarus according to ministry spokesman Robert Szaniawski.
