Support for Belarussian students

The Danish Minister for Co-operation, Connie Hedegaard, will open a presentation about Nordic involvement with Belarus in the Danish Parliament 1 November, 16-17:00. The presentation is being held during the annual Session of the Nordic Council, at which foreign affairs are also on the agenda.

Other keynote speakers will be Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Per Unckel, the Rector of the European Humanities University (EHU) in Vilnius, Anatoly Mikhailov, and three students from the exiled university.

The Nordic Council of Ministers has taken several initiatives in collaboration with the EU Commission to promote progress towards democracy in Belarus in the last year. A few weeks ago, the Nordic Council of Ministers again joined forces with the EU to provide an opportunity for Belarussian students to enjoy higher education outside their home country.

The new programme includes funding for Belarussian students to study at the European Humanities University (EHU) in Vilnius and at various universities in the Ukraine. The programme will support a total of 305 Belarussian students in the next three years. This represents almost twice the current Nordic Council of Ministers' investment in the education of Belarussian youngsters.

The Nordic foreign ministers are meeting and will hold a press conference 11:15 - 11:30 in Eigtveds Pakhus, Salon A, Asiatisk Plads 2G, Copenhagen. The foreign affairs debate at the Session of the Nordic Council will be held on 1 November, 14 - 16:00.
