Russian, Belarussian Defense Ministries approve plan until 2009

MOSCOW. Oct 20 (Interfax) - A meeting of the leaderships of the Russian and Belarussian Foreign Ministries has approved a plan of joint action for the period until 2009, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said.

"It will serve as a foundation for the annual planning of operations of the regional grouping of forces of Belarus and Russia," he told journalists after the meeting.

"I want to emphasize that the measures of guaranteeing military security planned within the format of the Union State are closely linked with the measures planned in the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization," he said.

The meeting focused on questions of advancing the legal groundwork of bilateral military cooperation, he said.

"We discussed questions related to development of interstate agreements that will serve as a foundation for establishing a common communication system, a system of navigation support and a joint air defense system," he said.
