Anniversary of the murder of another journalist

IndexIndex

On 20 October, journalists from what remains of the independent press in Belarus marked the first anniversary of the murder of journalist Veranika Charkasava of the independent trade union newspaper Solidarnasc.

She was found stabbed to death in her apartment. Police followed a number of false trails, even calling her 15 year old son Anton Filimonau out of school for interrogation, and suggesting a link to her reports on 'unconventional' sects several years previously, reported Radio Liberty. However friends said her recent work had dealt with alleged Belarusian government arms embargo busting sales to Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Though her son's case was formally dropped for lack of evidence in April, two days before the anniversary Anton was summonsed by police and told he was a suspect again. On the day of the anniversary, the funeral took place of another Belarusian journalist, Vasil Hrodnikau, from the opposition daily, Narodnaya Volya, who had been found two days earlier with severe head injuries.
