EU diplomats call for action against Lukashenko

ISN SECURITY WATCH (Monday, 10 October: 23.18 CET) - European diplomats on Monday called for tough measures against the regime of Belarusian President Alexandar Lukashenko, including trade sanctions, in an effort to support the opposition ahead of next year's presidential elections.

The recommendations were made at the Forum 2000 conference in Prague hosted by former Czech president Vaclav Havel, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

Brian Bennet, Britain's ambassador to Belarus, went as far as to suggest that the EU use its own funds to support the opposition against Lukashenko, according to RFE/RL.

Bennet is hoping to support Alexandar Milinkevich, who was recently chosen as the opposition's single candidate to run against Lukashenko in 2006 presidential elections.
