Belarusian MPs to Begin Historic Visit

A delegation of parliamentarians from the Republic of Belarus will begin a four-day official visit to Estonia on Monday, the first in the history bilateral relations between the countries.

Members of the 12-strong Working Group of the National Assembly of Belarus on Cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Estonia will meet with Speaker of Parliament Ene Ergma, as well as with members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

According to a statement on the Belarusian embassy's website, the purpose of the visit is to "strengthen relations between the partner associations, MPs, as well as the general development of Belarusian-Estonian inter-parliamentary cooperation."

Meetings with representatives of the Estonian Foreign Ministry and members of the Tallinn city government are also planned.

Official contact between the two parliaments began in July 2009, when a delegation of Estonian MPs visited Belarus.
