Latvia and Belarus take significant step for co-operation in education

On 23 September Secretary of State of the Foreign Ministry Andris Teikmanis met with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Valery Voronetsky who had arrived in Latvia within the framework of the visit by the Prime Minister of Belarus Sergey Sidorsky.

Andris Teikmanis expressed appreciation for a dynamic and positive development of the political dialogue between both countries in recent years. When discussing the current matters of bilateral co-operation, economy in particular, the Secretary of State noted that Belarus should reduce administrative obstacles to a successful work of Latvian businesses and to achieving balance in mutual trade.

Both sides voiced satisfaction at the signing during the visit of an intergovernmental agreement on co-operation for preparing management professionals at the master's studies level, which will be instrumental for setting up a MBA programme at the Belarus State University in co-operation with the Riga Business School of the Riga technical University. That would be a valuable contribution not only to the development in education co-operation but also to economy.

During a discussion on the current topics concerning the EU-Belarusian co-operation, both sides expressed interest in further deepening of relations. Mr Teikmanis indicated to the steps Belarus should take in order to promote democracy and human rights issues, as well as actively explore opportunities provided by the EU Eastern Partnership.
