Venezuela president to discuss cooperation in Belarus

MINSK, September 8 (Itar-Tass) - President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela arrives here on Tuesday for a two-day visit.

"During the visit, Hugo Chavez is planning to meet with the Belarussian leadership. He intends to deliver a popular science lecture at the National Library of Belarus," the press service of the Embassy of Venezuela to Belarus announced.

The programme for Chavez stay also provides for a tour of the Minsk factory for the manufacture of wheeled truck tractors and a visit to the Military Academy. The Venezuelan leader will visit Belarus within the scope of his 11-day tour abroad.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said earlier that the development of versatile relations with Venezuela is a priority of his country's foreign policy. He said, "The high level of inter-state political dialogue is accompanied with meticulous work to lay a reliable economic foundation of bilateral relations".

One of the main interests of Belarus in Venezuela is to participate in the development of oil deposits. In 2007 the two countries established a joint-venture enterprise for the production of oil, the Petrolera BeloVensolana, with the participation of the Belarusneft production association and the Venezuealan state-run oil company, the Petroleos de Benezuela.

In recente years Lukashenko and Chavez repeatedly stated mutual friendship and exchanged visits. Lukashenko paid an official visit to Venezuela in December 2007. Chavez visited Belarus three times -- in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
