South Korea - Outcome of the 5th Korea-Belarus Policy Consultation

1. The 5th Korea-Belarus Policy Consultation was held in Minsk on September 28, chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Yong-joon and his Belarusian counterpart Sergei Aleinik.

2. In the Policy Consultation, after noting with satisfaction the steady development of Korea-Belarus amicable and cooperative ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, the two sides exchanged views on ways to promote exchanges between high-level and parliamentary officials as well as mutual support on the international stage.

3. The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in the trade, investment and tourism fields by building upon their mutually-complementary economic structures. To this end, they are to actively pursue exchanges between business groups and various related agreements between the governments of Korea and Belarus. Furthermore, they agreed to hold the 3rd Korea-Belarus Joint Committee on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in Seoul next year.

4. The delegations from the two countries also had a luncheon meeting, during which they had a broad exchange of views on the recent situation on the Korean peninsula, current status of inter-Korean relations, situation of Belarus' neighboring countries, and recent developments with regard to the Commonwealth of Independent States and EU.

5. The latest Policy Consultation is seen to have reaffirmed Korea-Belarus amicable ties and have contributed to continuing their enhanced substantive cooperation in economy and trade as well as cooperation on the international stage.
