Belarus cautious about U.S. decision to scrap Europe missile shield

Interfax-Ukraine

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko called for a cautious attitude to Thursday's decision by the United States to scrap its plan for a missile shield in Europe because, instead of it, Washington "is considering deploying new modern sea-based means in northern and southern Europe."

"We shouldn't be in a hurry to applaud to [the U.S. move]. Lets' see what further action the U.S. and its allies in the North Atlantic alliance will take," Lukashenko told reporters on Saturday.

"The essence of the U.S. position is that it won't deploy missile defense elements but is considering deploying new modern sea-based [weapons] in northern and southern Europe," he said.

"This means reinforcement with modern [weapons]," he said.
