EU urges Belarus to stop demonstration crackdowns

Associated Press

The European Union is urging authorities in Belarus to stop using force against peaceful demonstrators.

The office of the EU presidency, currently held by Sweden, said Thursday that it was concerned about the crackdown by Belarusian authorities on peaceful demonstrations in Minsk.

It urges authorities to stop using force on demonstrators and ensure that independent journalists can work without interference.

Police on Wednesday broke up an unauthorized protest in the Belarusian capital commemorating the disappearance of two opposition politicians and a TV journalist. More than 20 demonstrators where arrested amid police violence.

Authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko has run Belarus with an iron fist for nearly 15 years.
