Stockholm - A police crackdown on protesters in Belarus was Thursday criticized by the European Union. The protest in central Minsk on Wednesday was staged in commemoration of the disappearance of two government critics 10 years ago. Police reportedly used clubs to disperse the protesters.
Authorities in Belarus were urged "to refrain from the use of force in dealing with peaceful demonstrations," Sweden, the current holder of the European Union presidency, said in a statement issued on behalf of the bloc's 27 member states.
Belarusian Vice Speaker Viktor Gonchar and businessman Anatoly Krasovsky disappeared in 1999 after publicly criticizing Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarus' authoritarian president.
