Union State formation is frozen, President of Belarus says

The formation of the Union State has been frozen, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said at a press conference for the Russian mass media on September 8.

"We, of course, have done a lot in Belarus-Russia relations. On the other hand, it could have been done without the Union State, simply within the framework of bilateral relations between the brotherly nations," Alexander Lukashenko believes, reported Belta.

According to him, the recent events in the Caucasus showed that a project of Belarus' joining the Russian Federation was unacceptable. "You know that there were such ideas in due time. Today many politicians acknowledge, though not out loud, that I was right," the President said. "This is absolutely not needed, either for Belarus or Russia. Otherwise, Russia will simply lose a reliable ally and a subject of international law," the President believes.

As an example, the Belarusian leader cited the relations between the USSR and Bulgaria that was ready to join the Soviet Union. "Back then the Soviet leadership acted wisely. In fact Bulgaria was the 16th Soviet republic. Why lose an ally in the international arena and a voice in the Unite Nations and other organisations," Alexander Lukashenko said.

The President is confident that a lot has been done in the formation of the Union State. First of all this is the Union State Treaty. "We believe this treaty should be honoured. If it needs to be adjusted, we do not mind. But I oppose adjusting this document to make it weaker. Otherwise what is the point?"

Alexander Lukashenko added that the developments in the world are so fast-paced that "we will have to revisit this problem in the near future, discuss it in principle and give a clear answer to people what we are going to do in the future. "So far other problems, which are minor problems I believe, have moved this issue into the background," the head of state concluded.
