Monitors dismiss Belarussian election as undemocratic

By Moscow correspondent Scott Bevan

No opposition candidates have been elected to parliament in a poll in the former Soviet state of Belarus.

European monitors have described the election as disappointing.

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko who the United States has called Europe's last dictator said prior to the poll he had hoped the West would view this election as democratic.

But observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe have criticised the election, citing a lack of transparency in the campaign and the vote counting as two areas of concern.

Opposition parties and activists have also dismissed the election, with some labelling it undemocratic.

The country's election commission says the results indicate that all 110 parliamentary seats would go to candidates who are supportive of President Lukashenko.
