Belarus Opposition Left with No Seats in Parliament

The opposition in Belarus did not win any seats in the local parliament in Sunday's early elections.

Seventy of the 263 candidates for the 110 seats in the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament were from the opposition.

After the results become known, the Belarus opposition declared the elections undemocratic, and organized a protest rally in Minsk Sunday night against the President Lukashenko, who was described as "the last dictator in Europe".

Representatives of the observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe later announced that Sunday's elections in Belarus did show some progress, but that as a whole they did not meet its standards for fair and democratic electoral process.
