No Incidents Reported in Belarussian Polls - Observers

MINSK/MOSCOW. Sept 28 (Interfax-West) - Voting began on time and is proceeding smoothly at the polling stations where observers are deployed, Nauryz Aidarov, the head of the observer mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States, said at a press briefing in Minsk.

No irregularities were reported as of 10 a.m. Balloting is being monitored by Belarusian and foreign observers, he said.

Russian Central Election Commission member and coordinator of the CIS international observers Vasily Volkov said the Belarussian parliamentary election "has been organized in strict compliance with national legislation and international standards."

"All polling stations opened at 8 a.m., and international observers deployed here have not reported any abuses. The balloting is going quietly and voters are in good mood," Volkov said on Ekho Moskvy radio on Sunday.

The team of international observers comprises representatives of CIS and Baltic countries, and international organizations.

"Observers are demonstrating excellent teamwork. The Belarusian authorities and Central Election Commission have done all they could to guarantee their free access to any place they choose. We think we'll fulfill our mission," Volkov said.

Parliamentary polls are being held in Belarus on Sunday, in which 110 deputies will be elected to the national parliament's House of Representatives.

Over 260 candidates are running, and about 60 of them represent the United Democratic Forces. Among the candidates there are about 30 current parliamentary deputies.

Nearly 6,500 polling stations opened in Belarus at 8 a.m. local time (9 a.m., Moscow time), the Central Election Commission told Interfax.
