Belarus votes in parliamentary election

MINSK, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - Belarussians are voting on Sunday in a parliamentary election, which the authorities say will be the most fair in the country's history.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, whose re-election the United States and Europe refused to recognize in 2006, citing fraud, expects European observers to approve the parliamentary poll as free and fair.

Around 70 representatives of opposition parties are running for 110 seats of the Belarusian parliament, which is currently dominated by Lukashenko's supporters. Analysts say that although some opposition members may win some seats in the parliament, they are unlikely to challenge Lukashenko's rule.

Lukashenko is seeking to improve relations with the European Union and the United States, which have not recognized any election or referendum held in Belarus since 1996.
