FOCUS News Agency

Minsk. Polling stations opened Sunday in Belarussian parliamentary elections that could determine whether the autoratic regime of President Alexander Lukashenko warms to the West AFP reports.

Voting began at 8:00 am (0500 GMT), giving the nation of 10 million people wedged between longtime ally Russia and the European Union 12 hours to cast ballots.

Lukashenko, a wily authoritarian who has been in power for 14 years, has voiced hopes the vote will be recognised by the EU and the United States, which are closely monitoring Belarus' democratic credentials.
