UNIDO okays Belarus' initiative on UN GA energy debates

Belarus has proposed to bring an energy issue in the UN limelight by organizing in the course of the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly (UN GA) topical debates for discussing an equal access to the technologies of energy efficiency and saving, alternative and renewable energy resources, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian Permanent Office in the UN.

In the course of the session in the UN headquarters in New York "Energy services for the millennium development goals" Belarus' permanent member in the UN Andrei Dapkyunas draw the attention of the member-states and international development agencies to the initiative put forward by Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov a year ago to convene a UN GA special session to discuss the issues of energy technologies. Special attention was paid to the fact that this initiative had already been approved at the Non-Aligned Movement ministerial meeting in Teheran in July 2008.

Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Head of a group of UN-Energy Agencies Kandeh Yumkella supported the Belarusian initiative. He also stated the readiness of the UN competent bodies engaged in the issues related to the access to energy and energy technologies to provide all necessary assistance to the UN member-states in the arrangement and conducting of the debates.
