Belarus-Latvia commission signs joint demarcation map

A Belarusian-Latvian demarcation commission signed a joint border demarcation map in Minsk on September 17, BelTA informs.

In the course of a session in the Belarusian capital on September 17-18, the commission is set to sign and seal the rest of the documents on the demarcation of the Belarusian-Latvian border (protocol on boundary signs, description of the state border, a catalogue of coordinates of the boundary signs). The commission is supposed to coordinate the text of the final demarcation protocol and the report on the activity of the demarcation commission that is due to be approved at the final session in Riga in October-November 2008.

Chairman of the Belarusian part of the demarcation commission Alexander Arkhipov told reporters that the joint border was determined on June 16, 1940.

Chairman of the Latvian part of the commission Irina Mangule said that "there were no disagreements between the sides of the commission" in the course of the work.

After the documents are signed, all necessary interstate procedures should be conducted. The final demarcation document will come into force after the sides exchange the notes on the implementation of all interstate procedures.

The length of the Belarusian-Latvian border totals 172 kilometres 912 meters and 29 centimetres with 417 boundary signs including 17 buoys.
