Russia denies plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus

RBC, 03.09.2007, Moscow 19:27:01.Russia is not planning to deploy nuclear weapons on Belarus's soil, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists. He stressed that the Foreign Ministry had stated on several occasions already that Russia had no such plans.

This follows a statement Russian Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov made last week that if a Union State was established between the two countries, Moscow and Minsk would be discussing the stationing of nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory in response to the deployment of elements of a US anti-missile defense system in Eastern Europe.
