Fun in Daresbury science labs for Belarus children

Aug 3 2009 by Andrew Bowan, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News

FOURTEEN children from Belarus will visit STFC Daresbury Laboratory today for a fun afternoon as part of a four-week stay in the North West.

The youngsters, aged 11 and 12, will visit the labs as part of a recuperative holiday organised by the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline charity.

While there, the youngsters will have the chance to see and taste ice cream made using liquid nitrogen and take part in other fun, hands-on science experiments - as well as finding out about space and astronomy courtesy of the lab's mobile planetarium 'StarLab'.

It's the third year that Daresbury Laboratory has hosted fun and engaging activities for the Belarus children who were born some years after the nuclear disaster in 1986. Despite the time gap, they remain at risk of cancer.

Their four-week break from the contamination can increase their life expectancy by as much as two years because it gives their immune systems have a chance to recover.
